Post 10
One of your 4th grade female students is very well developed physically and looks as if she is 15 instead of 9 years of age. Today you heard a group of 5th grade boys commenting on her body in a lewd and humiliating manner. Two other teachers also heard these comments but blew them off as "boys will be boys," and "she needs to get used to it."
Considering teacher ethics and responsibilities, describe how you might respond to and handle this situation.
I would talk to the boys about respect of women. If it continued, I would send a letter home to the parents. I would also talk with the the teachers who disregarded the comments about the importance of respect, because if the boys start to disrespect the girls, they could grow to disrespect all women if they are corrected. I might also have a talk to the entire class about the importance of respecting our peers and how bullying isn't acceptable in any form. We never know what people are going through so there is no excuse for bullying people. Hopefully, this would help stop the problem.

I like how you incorporated the parents into the situation. I mentioned how the parents are responsible for talking about puberty to their child, but I also like how you would inform them about the situation. It is important to have an open communication with the parents of all of your students, in order to keep healthy relationships.
ReplyDeleteI think one of your best points in here is that you would talk with the entire class about respect and exactly what that means. I like how this is related back to the subject of bullying because it is, just in a different form I personally wouldn't have thought about. Addressing the teachers is also very important as well. They need to know that the comments they made to the students and their ways of handling the situation were not unnoticed. I would only hope that maybe when they realized other teachers had seen how they handled it plus confrontation, they would be sure to stop the rude comments in the future. Great post
